Our very own 'Mallow' silicone ...
As many of our customers already know, we are pouring more and more of our babies in our very special Mallow© silicone. This is an extremely soft silicone that is produced especially for us (and has been copyrighted by Our World of Chi, so please don't ask us how it is made!!).
The Mallow© silicone is a premium quality platinum silicone but is very much softer than the usual silicones that are used by other doll artists, it is the same silicone that is used in prosthetics, and we can control how soft it goes from soft, to 'so very soft' that it is almost like a marshmallow to handle which is why we call it 'Mallow'. We vary the softness from baby to baby, the larger the baby the less mallow we add - when it is very soft it can feel almost spongy which is very difficult to handle with a larger heavier baby. It is also more stretchy when it is softer, so again more difficult to handle in the larger baby although we now embed a 'spine' of firmer silicone in the larger babies so that there is more stability without losing that gorgeous soft feel.
The Mallow© silicone, being so squishy, also is more likely to have more surface imperfections than a baby cast in the usual Ecoflex 20 or harder silicone, the harder silicone having a rubbery feel to it but may look smoother on the surface. During the painting process, the surface of the mallow becomes stronger because we give it a seal coat which also creates the surface wrinkling which makes the baby look so very lifelike and cuddly and so much more movement.
Depending on which baby, we sometimes give our customers the choice between the standard Ecoflex 20 silicone and our special and magical Mallow© silicone, but would like to point out that in choosing our special soft and wrinkly silicone it is possible that the baby will have more anomalies which we feel makes our babies even more lovable and unique. So if you prefer the 'look' of a perfect surface then choose Ecoflex, if you prefer the 'feel' of a baby that sinks into your arms, then our special squishy Mallow© silicone is definitely the choice for you!
